Step into medieval Silk Road history and monumental oriental architecture in total comfort with certified chauffeurs by In-Turist. Towering above the historic crossroads of Chorsu, the Kukeldash Madrasah represents the largest and most venerated preserved 16th-century architectural monument in Tashkent. Built during the Shaybanid dynasty, this monumental institution functioned for centuries as an acclaimed center of scholarship, theological education, and civic assembly, continuing to symbolize the city's living spiritual heritage today. Historical Foundations and Enduring Legacy The complex was completed around 1570 during the governance of Dervish Khan by his chief minister Kulbaba Kukeldash, whose ceremonial title designated a milk-brother to the ruling monarch: - Center of Erudition: Designed to house both scholars and students, the madrasah provided advanced study in legal sciences, natural philosophy, mathematics, logic, and sacred literature. - Historical Crossroads: Surviving major seismic tremors, regional conflicts, and dynastic changes over the centuries, the fortress-like structure intermittently served as an international caravanserai, a fortified redoubt, and an artisan storehouse. - Masterful Restoration: Comprehensive preservation programs carried out across the twentieth century and following independence restored the vaulted minarets, glazed ceramic tilework, and internal cells. The institution actively serves as an operational Islamic seminary today. Architectural Mastery: Grandeur and Oriental Traditions Constructed from durable fired ochre brick, the complex exemplifies the balanced symmetry of traditional Transoxiana building methods: - The Imposing Portal (Pishtaq): The exterior facade features an imposing 20-meter arched entrance decorated with geometric girih compositions, intricate turquoise tilework, and refined calligraphy bands. - The Shaded Central Courtyard: Beyond the vaulted entry vestibule lies a tranquil inner courtyard bordered by two tiers of vaulted student cells (hujras) and shaded walkways. - Thematic Lecture Chambers and Mosque: Corner domed lecture rooms (darskhanas) and an inner prayer hall incorporate specialized natural ventilation shafts, balanced acoustic vaults, and delicate carved plasterwork. CHORSU BOZORI: BUYUK IPAK YO‘LI AFSONASI VA SHARQONA TAOMLAR MASKANI

CHORSU BAZAAR: SILK ROAD LEGACY AND AUTHENTIC ORIENTAL FLAVORS

Explore Tashkent's legendary ancient trade junction in complete comfort with personal chauffeurs services by In-Turist. Chorsu Bazaar is not merely a trading hub; it is a monumental living chronicle of Tashkent's two-thousand-year urban and cultural evolution. Nestled in the heart of the historic Chach oasis, this marketplace served as an indispensable artery along the Great Silk Road, linking caravan networks between China, Persia, India, Byzantium, and the Eurasian steppe. Deep Historical Foundations: From Medieval Binkat to Chorsu The Era of Chach and Binkat: Arab chroniclers and geographers of the 9th and 10th centuries (such as Ibn Hawqal and al-Istakhri) documented medieval Tashkent under the name Binkat. The central urban square and marketplace developed precisely where Chorsu stands today, positioned at the convergence of the administrative fortress (ark), the inner citadel (shahristan), and the bustling artisan suburb (rabad). Etymology of the Name: Derived from the Persian words "chor" (four) and "su" (streams, directions), "Chorsu" designates a crossroads where major commercial trade routes intersect. Historically, merchant expeditions departed from here toward Samarkand, the Fergana Valley, Khorezm, and northern nomad realms. Medieval Caravanserais: In its zenith, the bazaar perimeter bustled with multi-story caravanserais, domed trade galleries (tims), public bathhouses, and coin mints. Merchants exchanged silk fabrics, Damascus steel blades, mountain gems, exotic spices, and purebred Arabian and Fergana horses. The Shaybanid Ensemble: During the 16th century, Dervish Khan constructed the majestic Kukeldash Madrasah adjacent to the market square, seamlessly integrating the bazaar with the Friday Mosque of Khoja Ahrar Vali. The venue served both as a vibrant market and a civic forum where public decrees were proclaimed and street acrobats (dorboz) entertained crowds. The Modern Dome: A Masterpiece of Soviet Engineering and Modernism Following the devastating Tashkent earthquake of 1966, the central core of the Old City was completely restored and the complex received its current monumental incarnation, as a tribute to ancient oriental while honoring ancient Eastern forms. The 1980 Project: A design team headed by architect Vladimir Azimov engineered a colossal reinforced concrete dome spanning over 300 meters in diameter, evoking the monumental silhouette of ancient dome-covered bazaars. Aerodynamic Microclimate: Adorned with vivid turquoise ceramics and ornamental geometric patterns, the dome's structural layout promotes natural airflow circulation, maintaining a remarkably cool interior climate even through intense Central Asian summer heat. 4 Key Zones for Modern Visitors 1. Spices & Dried Fruit Terraces: High-altitude Zarafshan cumin, organic saffron, mountain almonds, dried figs, and over fifteen regional varieties of raisins. 2. National Street Food Row (Open-Air Kitchen): Giant copper cauldrons brimming with wedding plov, crispy tandoor-baked flatbreads and samsa, spiced norin noodles, and wood-fired charcoal kebabs. 3. Artisans' Quarter: Authentic hand-thrown Rishtan pottery, master-forged Uzbek knives (pichak), iridescent Margilan silk scarves, and embroidered suzani tapestries. 4. Dairy Mezzanine (elevated interior balcony under the dome): Age-old nomadic staples such as kurut(dehydrated sour milk balls) and rich mountain kaymak. TOLE BI (KALDIRGACH-BIY) MAUSOLEUM: A SHARED SACRED HERITAGE IN CENTRAL TASHKENT

Explore the capital’s profound historical and spiritual landmark in complete comfort, accompanied by In-Turist’s dedicated personal chauffeurs. Located in the historic heart of Tashkent within the Sheikhantaur memorial complex, the 15th-century Tole Bi Mausoleum (celebrated across Central Asia as Kaldirgach-biy) stands as an enduring architectural monument to the shared lineage, cultural brotherhood, and resilience of the Uzbek and Kazakh peoples. This sacred site serves as both an inspiring symbol of historic self-determination and an essential pilgrimage destination. Historical Figure: The Respected Judge, Orator, and Statesman Tole Bi Alibekuly was born in 1663 in the Zhaisan tract in the Chu River valley into the family of a tribal judge. He belonged to the Zhanys branch of the prominent Dulat clan within the Senior Jüz — the foundational tribal union that shaped the Kazakh nation. Renowned as a profound poet, orator, and fair magistrate, Tole Bi collaborated with celebrated jurists Kazybek Bi and Aiteke Bi to author the seminal legal code "Zhety Zhargy" ("The Seven Charters"), which skillfully integrated Islamic Sharia jurisprudence with customary nomadic legal traditions. Following the death of Khan Zholbarys, Tole Bi ruled Tashkent for six years, from 1743 to 1749. During a turbulent era, he stimulated the urban oasis's economy by encouraging pastoralists to embrace trade, craft skills, and settled agriculture. Passing away in 1756 in the Akburkhan horde, he was buried with full civic and state honors in central Tashkent, directly adjacent to the tomb of Sufi saint Sheikh Havendi Tahur. The Legend of the Holy Swallow ("Kaldirgach") In 1723, during the devastating Dzungar incursions led by Galdan-Tseren, urban populations abandoned their properties in panic. Tole Bi alone stayed within his tent. When brought before the fearsome conqueror and questioned about his lack of fear, the judge stated that a swallow had nested upon his tent roof to nurse newborn chicks, and destroying the home of an innocent bird was unthinkable. Touched by such courage, piety, and compassion, the commander spared the elder and his relatives. Henceforth, the populace affectionately hailed him as Kaldirgach-biy (Guardian of the Swallow). Architectural and Cultural Distinctions Distinct Twelve-Sided Pyramidal Dome: The structure features a ribbed 12-sided pyramidal tent dome, a rare architectural form in Uzbekistan's historic monuments. Historical Continuation: In the late 18th century, Yunus Khoja united Tashkent into an independent city-state; notably, in his youth, he served as the personal secretary to Tole Bi. A Sacred Pilgrimage Hub: The mausoleum remains an essential destination for international travelers, family lineages, and pilgrims from Kazakhstan honoring their legendary forefather and legal architect.
